Installing backtrack on usb as installing it on hard drive

I want to know if I can install Backtrack on my usb drive in the same way as it is installed on hard drive or I should follow the steps of persistent usb installation.I tried to use LiLi Live usb creater but it showed me error every time I tried to log in.

yes you can unetbootin allows persistent without having to configure anything.
if you want multiple os on usb yumi is good. it dosent have persistent tho need to edit default cmd line (i have read never tryed it tho)
i use yumi but thats only because i install on hdd
you can also get multiple os with unetbootin but thats a bit more complicated

I personally use YUMI on a 16 gig flash drive with a good number of linux dist. on it (bt5r3, mandriva, dban, etc). It does work really well, a very easy to use interface, and is also easy to customize with your own picture or menus and such, but doesn't have good persistence :\. As relax suggested, unetbootin would be my next choice if you want a flash drive dedicated to bt5r3 with persistence.

OP - If you are getting an error using LiLi then you must be doing something wrong. As far as I've experienced, Unetbootin only allows persistence on ubuntu.

I would say try again using LiLi.

Are you selecting the right image?
Did you download the proper Backtrack image?


It would help if you posted the exact error that you are getting.

If you are having issues with unetbootin try using "Universal USB Installer"

Just specify your drive path, ISO, installation, and persistence setting then hit "Continue" and you should be good to go.

Well actually you can just boot it from a CD or USB drive than run the installer , pop in the other USB key, select the second USB key as the root partition.
Be sure to install grub to the USB drive and not to your main drive (probably sdb or sdc depending on how many HDD's are in your machine)

This is as persistant as it comes, regular install but only to the pendrive.
It however takes up a lot of space.
One advantage is the easy full disk encr. you can add this way.

What error are you getting? What version of Backtrack are you trying to install? Is it 64 bit or 32 bit? Did you try using "Universal USB Installer"?

I've never had any problems with it. Be sure you try to "Run As Administrator" prior to creating your bootable USB.

The only issue I've personally ever had installing Backtrack - which was on a new laptop - was a black screen stuck after startx. This was due to the display drivers/graphics card and the solution involved inserting a line of code in the grub menu. But as for creating the USB via Installer I've never had any problems at all.

If i where you i would try downloading the image again without any acceleration software and burn it to a dvd, this rules out corrupted usb/iso when you boot boot in safemode.
If this dont work test your HDD for bad sectors. do you have any other partitions on your computer that might fuck this up? other linux or swap?

I second the above post. Definitely re-download the ISO just in case of a bad download. That could very well fix your problem all together. I'd suggest obtaining the ISO via torrent its much faster than direct.

Help me understand. Are you wanting to install this to your hard drive or to a USB? I was under the assumption you were looking at a USB install.

If re-downloading doesn't help you in creating a Live CD for your Hard Drive install try the steps listed to fix your USB install and see if that helps.

Try issuing a 'chkdsk' command from an elevated command console to check your drive.

If you're dealing with a USB install remember to Run as Admin.

Always do the md5sum check.

compare it against the one on the website.

If you dont , your asking for trouble.
It might boot, install, run...
Strange errors, random crashes etc etc.

One would likely fail to diagnose the source of the problems.
Spent infinte time searching the web and end up being drunk out of frustration
