The WOW signal
« on: October 14, 2012, 07:50:23 am »
Everyone of u must have heard about it.The WOW! signal was detected by Jerry R Ehman on August 15, 1977.

I don't get it.

Code sequence were just named WOW, because person analysing data couldn't find better marking to express his founding.

What you mean "Ca crack the code?"

We must crack the code?

To lazy to read:
The initial interest in this signal stems from the fact that it was thought as an extraterrestrial signal.

OP: Thank you for sharing, I've known about this signal many years ago.

Sorry, It would be -Can not Ca

I am not saying that u must crack the code. I was just asking that if cryptographers can code & decode messages, can they decode this too. I mean no one has succeeded in cracking the signal. Why  can't u people try. In my case I am not trying this because I don't know cryptography.

Cryptography actually involves lots of advanced math, not everyone can understand it well.

Also, look at hashes, for example. You can hash a string, but the opposite action is impossible (correct me if I'm wrong). That's why you have to use brute-force attacks in order to crack a hash (like: get a random string, hash it, compare the result with the hash we want to crack, repeat all previous steps until we find a match).

Only for one-way algorithms (MD5 etc.).

Thanks for the correction! So, for example, base64. Is it a two-way algorithm?

What happened?
Two things: First, you assumed it was relatively easy for a cryptographer to decode it (or at least you made it look like you think it's easy, from what you wrote). Second, you should read more about the WOW! signal, because from my quick research, if it really is an extraterrestrial signal, it was made to resemble Hydrogen radiations, and Hydrogen is very abundant in our Universe. So (and again, if it really is from extraterrestrial lifeforms) it was not meat to be some sort of communication for us to decode, but rather a way to say "Hey, we are here and you know we're intelligent because we can mimic Hydrogen radiation".

blablabla

Base64 is an encoding, not an encryption or hash function.

@Snayler. I think this is possible because I read that NASA scientists once sent a capsule into space. It had the e=mc2 written on the capsule so if the extra terrestrial found it they can maybe recognise there is intelligent life on Earth.  I don't know if the aliens can read Earthling physics equation!  ;D
