[Free] E-Learning Platforms
« on: October 15, 2012, 06:29:16 am »
So, lately I've been looking for some free E-learning platforms I can learn programming from. I thought it would be nice to share the links with this community:

Udacity.com - Most of you must know this one since it has been around for some time. I never actually taken any course, so I can't comment on the quality of the courses they offer.

CodingBat.com - Seems like a website full of programming exercises. It seems to only support Java and Python.

HackAdemy - From the Hack-a-Server guys, haven't tried it yet.

Codecademy.com - This is one of my favorites. It's very intuitive, and they use a badge system that may (or may not) keep you motivated and focused on your goals (you earn badges by solving exercises, finishing courses, solving X exercises in one day, etc...).

Coursera.org -  It has 198 Courses from 36 different Universities worldwide (Altough they say they have 33). The courses cover almost any subject (Science, Music, Computer Science, Psychology, etc...). New courses are added every month and it's totally free, ofc!

edX.org - Founded by Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University and Berkley University (CA), it's on its zero year (as if, they started the project this year, 2012). Classes are given trough video, which can be downloaded. Since this is the first year of the project, they will distribute free certificates (as long as you have at least a C score) to students. Next year, certificate will be paid (but as it seems, it will be nothing too expensive, post office costs and such).

EDIT:
As mentioned by other members below or on other threads/forums:

wibit.net - "A video tutorial web site offering cutting edge programming and computer tutorials. We specialize in focused and linear content. WiBit is a great place to start learning how to program, or to pick up new skills even if you've been at it a while." (Posted by peak)

blackhatacademy.net - "The Academy was founded by a group of security and forensics professionals who are unhappy with the rampant misinformation and blatant negligence across the spectrum of development and security industries. We have chosen to combat this with our own software and tutorials demonstrating effective techniques and their correct applications. Students and any other beneficiaries of this knowledge will be equipped to tackle the challenges of development, information security, forensics and everything in between." (Posted by tr0gdor)

learnstreet.com - "LearnStreet is an early-stage startup focused on changing the way people of all backgrounds and skill levels learn how to code." (Posted by phox)

TutorialsPoint.com - As suggested by tejavenom on his post, this site seems to be full of tutorials on the most diverse programming languages, scripting languages, web development languages, among others.

MIT Open Courseware - As mentioned by gh0st on his thread.

UCI Open Courseware - "The University launched its OpenCourseWare initiative in November 2006. As the first West Coast university and UC campus to join the OpenCourseWare Consortium (OCWC), our OCW project is growing rapidly with the addition of nearly10 new courses every month."

UMass Boston OpenCourseWare - "Those who want to learn about artificial intelligence should head to UMass-Boston’s OCW site, for free course materials from this Fall 2008 class."

University of Notre Dame OpenCourseWare - Among the OCW offerings from Notre Dame are two computer science courses, Applied Multimedia Technology and Applied Multimedia.

VulnHub.com - Seen it on a thread on BT forums, this website is full of intentionally vulnerable ISO's (De-ICE, OWASP, Kioptrix, etc...)

LearnCpp.com - As mentioned by rasenove, this site is useful to learn C++.

Stanford Engineering Everywhere - Courses in basic computer science, artificial intelligence, linear systems, and other engineering topics.

Academic Earth - "Academic Earth believes that everyone has the right to a world-class education. Recognizing the existing barriers in academia, we continue our efforts to curate an unparalleled collection of free online courses from the world’s top universities."

MIT Video - Collection of lecture videos about various topics/courses.

CS50.tv - Website dedicated to Harvard's CS50 Course (Introduction to Computer Science I).

iTunesU - App for iOS and iTunes that gives access to lectures from multiple well known universities.

The Open University - Courses on various different subjects, with integration with iTunesU.

Google University - Google Courses, Courses on Mobile Programming, Web Development and Programming Languages.

ArsDigita - CS course modeled on the undergraduate CS program at MIT. Several of the courses were straightforward adoptions of MIT courses.

Grinnell College - Course materials and syllabi for dozens of computer science classes taught at Grinnell between 1997 and today.

California Institute of Technology - This prestigious technology school is offering computer science enthusiasts a chance to see what its classes are like, tuition-free, for a limited time.

Sofia - On the Sofia site, students can take a course in Java programming, Macromedia Flash, statistics, network security, or webpage authoring.

Carnegie Mellon University - Open Learning Initiative - Currently, Carnegie Mellon is only offering a couple CS-related courses, but over the next year they plan to add several more, so check back for updates.

Saylor - Free and Open Courses.

Khan Academy - "Khan Academy is an organization on a mission. We're a not-for-profit with the goal of changing education for the better by providing a free world-class education for anyone anywhere. "

Computer Science for Everyone - This site is currently offering a course in writing basic programs, a great introduction for anyone just getting into programming.

The New Boston - Sn0w - "Good for beginners. They have good tuts for Java, php, C, C++ and many more.."

This is all I have gathered so far, if you have any more links, feel free to contribute to the listing.
Cheers!

I knew a few but +1 for the list.

I wanna contribute to the list:

wibit.net

Quote
WiBit.net is a video tutorial web site offering cutting edge programming and computer tutorials. We specialize in focused and linear content. WiBit is a great place to start learning how to program, or to pick up new skills even if you've been at it a while.

Our approach to learning is simple: complete, comprehensive, linear classes. What this means is that we do not revisit concepts. We'll teach you the basics (ex: object oriented concepts) in our C++ tutorial and we will not revisit those concepts again. From C++ on it will be assumed the viewer understands the basic concepts covered in the previous course, so there is no repeated lessons. This type of learning holds two advantages:

Focused learning for the newbie
Courses that go straight to the point for experienced programmers
Here at WiBit we are all programmers. We built this site and these tutorials around what we would want in this site. We aim to create a learning environment that is easy to understand, easy to use, and comfortable.

WiBit started out as a school project many years ago and has recently been rejuvenated with new content, and a new web site. The old content still receives a lot of attention thanks to bit torrent, and it is because of that attention that we're relaunching the site. We receive emails daily from around the globe from people thanking us for the videos, and asking us to make more.

edX.org is pretty good.

You can still go and catch-up the CS50x course. It's a simple intro to Computer Science, but still good to have... They have only one due date for all the assigned works (15th April I believe); all the other interesting courses have already passed their due dates.
