Dropped phone in water. Does it have a chance?
« on: November 06, 2012, 09:26:19 pm »
Well I dun goof'd this time really badly. It fell in a "bowl" of water and I quickly managed to pull it out. The phone was still on, working as usual, except I noticed that the battery started charging itself LOL. Like it had the electricity symbol on it. Anyways, I quickly took out battery, SIM card, opened up the USB port, took off the MicroSD and I noticed they're all pretty wet, wiped them along with the battery and the back of the phone but I still think there is some moisture left inside so I just put it in a bowl of rice, covered up so that no air can go in and hoping that everything will turn out good within 3-4 days.

 What keeps me calm is that it was working still while wet so that makes me think it'll still turn on once fully dried. Hell, my cousin's home had a flood and his computer was on the floor, he didn't turn it on for about a week and once he got the courage, his computer started without a problem and so far no motherboard issues or anything of the sort.

Has anyone had similar situations? If so, did leaving it with rice or just like that got it to survive? It sucks because I was making some good money with that phone by helping other people.  :( It's from the Samsung Galaxy series btw, Galaxy Young.

Just keep it in the rice, it should be fine. Unless its a touch screen phone, then you are fucked.

Most likely it will be fine. As you said, it worked before you removed all the components (battery, sim..). Point is, as long as there are no short circuit damages and it is completely dry next time you use it, there are no reason it should be fucked.

Yes, most likely it's fine, leave it for 2 weeks straight. Not just 4 days, i did this and paid when my working screen went down. Luckily I let my phone to dry again and this time it worked.
The shopkeeper said my phones life will go down, it didn't and I used it for 4 years more, 4.5 total.

I've accidentally spilled water on top of my laptop's keyboard (twice!), the first time graphics went nuts, the second time everything was still working ok after the spill. The steps for my laptop were:
- Turn it off immediately, removing AC adapter and battery;
- Turn it upside down (display lid opened, keyboard facing down) to drain the water out;
- Leave it 12 hours on top of a heater (with a very low setting, you don't want the water to boil and evaporate, as that will leave more damage);
- Turn it on.

Only permanent damage I've had was 4 buttons from the keyboard stopped working (now I have to use a USB keyboard... With a laptop! Fuck Logic!).

For future reference, the most crucial step is to be quick turning the device off.

Interesting, it seems pretty much almost every gadget turns out fine once fully dried. Thanks for the tips everyone, I'll be sure to leave it for a week or two if I have to. And yes hanorutu, it is a touchscreen phone and luckaly I atleast had a screen protector on but I still feel like either the screen will not look good or it won't respond at all.

Hope the store can do something about it incase the phone is half-assed. Wonder if they will catch me lying if I don't mention anything about it drowning but more like it just shut off by itself, etc.

My warranty card is... tl;dr, fuck!

EDIT: After 4 and a half days in a small container with rice, it is working as good as new. :)
