inspiration problems
« on: November 07, 2012, 05:46:56 pm »
I haven't voiced it very much but I am a bit more than just your average musician (I've spent about $20,000 setting up my studio, not including the price of the building). I started music about 7 years ago and picked up a new instrument every year.

I find it a huge problem that I had all this inspiration at one time, and now it's just gone. I had too many song ideas to count before I learned to play all these instruments, and now I have/know everything I need to get those songs and ideas written down and produced. Of course I don't remember what ideas I had 7 years ago, but now that I know how to do all this stuff, I can't get inspired to make something.

Because of this lack of inspiration, I've been slowly turning away from music, which makes me very dissappointed in myself. However, I have noticed that the less I play music, the more I'm inspired to write a song, and the more random melodies I catch myself humming. So my question is, should I give up music for a short time, in hopes of catching inspiration? Or is there other possibly better ways to do this?

For me it's always difficult to stay poor at one thing. So yeah, when I am not doing it, I get leads of idea for it. I need breaks from any activity for me to make any progress.
At any time I've got 5 or 6 unfinished things to do.
And nothing I've ever done has been done in one go. It always takes more than one turn or bursts.

Well, I myself write songs and stuff, and have been into music for a while...

Here's what I suggest:
1) Always keep a notebook with you. Write, scribble, draw - anything that EVER comes to your mind.
2) Get some air everyday - just take an evening walk, alone. And while doing so, just ask yourself, "Who am I? What do I love? What do I want?"
3) Don't take long breaks - you may never have the incentive to play again, or dream as much again. There are days, when I play my guitar for 4-5 hrs, and there are days wherein I just pick t up for 15min. Infact, it'll all the same - just show yourself how much you love music.
4) Whenever you're done with something, record it. Publicize it. And be open to criticizm - don't get swayed by it. It should just motive you to work harder.
5) find someone who cares - first about you, and then about your music... Jam up, talk nonsense, have icecream together, dream together... This helps a LOT
6) and finally, have fun! :-)

if you need any real help, with lyrics and stuff, feel dree to message me! :D

ps - all ideas never work; only some do. I myself scrap iut about 60% of my attempts. But that is one of the best ways to learn and improve :)

My inspiration comes and goes as well. Some weeks ill be on a streak, like one after another, but the next week ill have nothing. Mine was just a phase. I quit making music for a bit, watch some tv play some video games whatever until it comes back. I am actually in a partial dry spell right now.

That really is an 'artiste' thing... The key is to make use of 'that' inspiration, as and when it comes... So ot's always good to keep a notebook in hand...

Great guidelines, you really know what you're talking about. Subconcsiously I've always done most of these (except for the fresh air, too fucking cold in the winter D:<) except for the never taking long breaks, I haven't REALLY played in quite a while. Last year I played a satisfactory amount but this year I played for 2 weeks straight in June and haven't played since.

It's kindof funny that I should read this today though..about 20 minutes ago I picked up a guitar I saw laying in a teachers office and remembered how good it feels to play.. yesterday an old "friend" stopped by and I decided to be nice and jam with him for about 30 minutes, that was also somewhat refreshing. I think part of it is that other people ruined it for me..we tried to go big but it didn't work out and we fell apart and I got mad and quit, but it looks like I'm back on track.

Let me tell you something more then...

I've myself dreamt big many times... Yea, many times...

And you know what? 'It' has always fallen apart for me...

Either I've moved away, or just didn't get along with people who think they know too much, or maybe even my mindset has changed...

And you know something more? I still haven't stopped dreaming big :D

Luck is an opportunity that comes when you're ready for it. So the day you get 'lucky', do let me know ;)

Well, things are looking to go in the right direction right now..just got 1 big leap to make at the end of the trip, if I miss I still should be able to get a nice paying job and focus on music again. I'm not gonna put it away again, it'll always be no less than a major hobby from now on.
