Remove Xlsx Password
« on: December 07, 2012, 10:25:40 pm »
So I've been a member of this forum for a couple months now but this is my first post. I've learned quite a bit just from reading and hopefully I can start to contribute. But right now, I have a question.

I work in the IT department of a large fruit company and an employee was let go but left a password on an xlsx file. I've done some research and so far have only found how to remove the password from sheets in a workbook, not the workbook itself and she encrypted the entire workbook. Does anybody know a good way of removing this? Preferably a free solution. Any input will be grateful

Try this?

1. Rename the file to .zip, for example, test.xlsx rename to test.zip.
2. Unzip the .zip file, then open \xl\worksheets\sheet1.xml (if sheet1 has password).
3. Delete this code: <sheetProtection password=…….. />, save.
4. Zip the folder to test.zip, the rename it to test.xlsx.
5. Enjoy

It was a pretty simple google search with the first few options o.O

Yea, like I was saying I found how to do it if only the sheet is protected but this is the entire workbook that's protected. When I try to open it, I get asked for password before it even opens

You can do it for the actual file... All you do is make sure file extentions are visable, and then change the whatever.xlsx to whatever.zip open the file with WinRAR (free download from rarlabs.com) and then modify the xml files... Check all files for that specific string and remove it. You can then rename it back to whatever.xlsx and then open it without excel and a password. Doesn't matter if its a sheet or book, it will just be a different xml file. idk I don't have a protected workbook to try it though.

eHow does have credible tutorials... Got that link from them... Should be kosher. Also seems to have the ability to crack open the workbook ;)
