Are you going to buy in online or build it and run it off a home connection?

Well you could smack 10000 dollars on a server but this will only be not a waste if you plan to use it as such.

It all depends on what it has to handle.
For a simple mail, fileshare, ftp server any old bag of rust will do and you could dumpster dive any such thing.
What does it need to do?

Are you planning to colocate the server once it's built or just host it from your house?  What kind of monthly budget do you have?  Chances are good that you could do better with using someone else's existing service than building your own.

For that kind of monthly budget, you could get light grid/cloud hosting.  Your flexibility would be, by far, increased over whatever system you might build.  As well, the bandwidth is likely to be far better.  Of course, there's always the 'unlimited space' options that nearly every host is touting for cloud-based services.  Anything grid-based could mean the ability to spawn new VPSs at a moments notice.

However, IF you want to just build for your home, any decent gaming system is going to be great for web/media hosting.  You don't necessarily need to waste $500 or so on a video card so you can have more money to spend on HDD space or something else.

At a $2K budget, here's what you could do. But it would be like mowing your residential front lawn with a tractor. It's borderline overkill, depends on your style. But the plus is that wherever you go, you mow that lawn like it's fkn cake. You'll be able to host and whatnot at blistering speeds.

Dell PowerEdge 2900 Tower
32 GB Ram
Dual quad core proc's, (good ones, since you're hosting)
Redundant power supply
Perc 5i controller
(8) 146GB 15k SAS Drives (fast speedy drives)

Go to www.cheapdellservers.com, call the number, ask for Chris. Tell him Treachery referred you. He doesn't know shit about hosting, but he's got deals on the hardware. Don't go for a Dell Workstation though. Same power for like $4K.
