Android Encryption
« on: January 27, 2013, 02:15:27 pm »
Hey Guys,

Anybody know of any decent free apps that encrypt an ICS phone? I mean fully encrypt it. And no not the stock encryption option either.

Also an app/widget that will completely shred all data on an ICS phone too with the touch of one button.

Please let me know.

Thanks.

Completely encrypt the phone? It sounds ridiculous.
Can you be more specific what do you want to encrypt?

I basically need an app that makes it impossible for the police to retrieve information from it like:

Visited web sites.
Cell site information.
Last dialled numbers.
Text messages
Pictures.
Notes/Memo's
GPS information

etc etc.

If the police really want information, they'll get it. Also I'm pretty sure that if they if out that the information on your phone is something they need and it is encrypted then they'll get you to spill the beans on the encryption :P

Well if it were that easy then I think everyone would do it. If the information is high profile enough they'll make you tell them whether you say you forgot or not.

If you actually did forget then I don't know. They'd probably make you remember.

This and I'm pretty sure by law you have to give up a password when asked for one :P

You think too much.. Instead, just install an application like "Lookout Mobile Security" which will enable you to do a remote wipe on your phone, and then be sure to set up a pattern lock as not even the FBI can break through it, they can only subpoena google for your account password, but by then you can either call someone to remote wipe or do it yourself (you can do from any computer with internet).

There you go, 5-0 can't do shit because you don't have to give them your pattern lock ;) And as always NEVER talk to a cop, just say nothing. If you must speak, only speak to say you want a lawyer, don't answer questions in any way. They want a confession, don't give it to them.

oh it is. What will they do beat you up??

that way you'll be more worried about more incriminating evidence that can be uncovered.

If you say you forgot, you forgot. They cannot get into your head.

the most they do is put you under yellow bulb, keep asking and intimidating you. That's it.

if real torture is authorized then you'll sing like a canary anyway.

if no torture then you can just keep bullshitting them. Just tell them random passwords. What can they do??

its like this..
Hey, what's your password...

(give a dumb look) .. Um... I keep forgetting it.

The problem is that some police like to turn the phone(s) off immediately after an arrest to preserve it's original state or whatever. And some police like to keep them on so that they don't have to go through all the trouble of Phone Lock, PIN, Password etc..

So i wanted to have an option where i can simply touch one widget on my home screen to wipe all my data and then turn the phone off so that it goes back to it's encrypted state.

Remote wipe apps would be good but that depends on a) Internet access on the phone and b) the police (or myself) leaving the phone on.

EDIT:

Also i usually remove the SIM card when i know i'm going in the slammer for the night.

Factory reset is what gets as close as you can get to this.
Or you could just destroy the phone. Snap it in half if you are sure you won't get it back from the police anyway.
Honestly I don't know if functional solutions exist, but I found some with a quick search:

Absolutely

Exactly

The phone doesn't need to be on to do a remote wipe. If you have a friend that you're cool with, have him/her do it for you if they ever find out you get caught up. It's very simple and effective. Then have the pattern and you're good to go

Wow, seriously? I just assumed it needed to be contacted somehow otherwise how will the phone know when the remote wiper has sent it a wipe command?

Sorry maybe this is just me being silly. I'll go ahead with this option but if you could just clarify thing a bit for me so i understand better.
