USB booting any linux distro fails me :(
« on: February 08, 2013, 03:08:10 am »
im starting this one from my old post with new questions. so after about 2 days of reaserching my problems i have come back with more refined question. As my old ones were very blunt and generic. so when i format my usb as FAT32 (windows) my computer reads it under FDD but if i format it under NTSF it reads it under USB so that i dont understand. also i looked into dd since im running windows i had to find it and i did. so in my reasearch i found a dd command "if=ubuntuisofile.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=1M" x being a varible. and it gave me a weird response (note the usb was unmounted, but i have tried it mounted and got the same response) "of=/dev/sde was unexpected at this time." since i have been accused of being lazy i dont want a straight answer but if anyone can tell me what questions i need to ask and what i need to research that would very helpful. thank you.  :D

Wait a second. I thought you were trying to install Arch. If you are going for Ubuntu you don't need the dd command although it will still work. UNetbootin should work just fine for Ubuntu. If not then look up Linux Live USB Creator. Honestly I don't think I've heard of many people having such problems in this stage. Just format the thingie to ntfs and run one of those programs.

Alright you seem lost :)

Well your trying I can see that and appreciate it.

As lucid said using dd is really not required to install something like ubuntu.
Hell there is even an installer that you can run inside windows iirc.
Just refer to their manual.

Which arises the next question; on what platform are you running dd ?

you said you did the dd in windows, God!! didn't know windows had one. don't you have any linux live cd cos that would be better and easy to format the usb(atleast for me)
If you can't explain it to a 6 year old, you don't understand it yourself.

Also use ext4 instead of the FAT filesystem.
>>>import this

Nope it was dd, and I understand I can download an instillation tool for windows from there website but that ruins my purpose. I really wanna boot it off my USB I just wish I knew what was wrong? Let me try everything suggested and I'll be back.

Again give us something.

What does work, what doesnt?
What happens, what error messages do you get?
If none:
Remove "quiet" from your boot parameters.

http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/#install
Just follow the tutorial.
