Samsung Galaxy S3 [Monitor Mode]
« on: March 14, 2013, 11:35:25 am »
I got an S3 a couple of days ago and rooted it and installed bt5, compiled aircrack-ng and reaver. but here's my problem, I cant get it in to Monitor mode >.<
Does anyone have experience with S3 and monitor mode?
Have searched google ofc and S2 Seems to have support for it but I found very little about S3.
tried both iwconfig and airmon-ng

any suggestions?

I don't own the phone and have never actually worked with it, however I recently saw an article about a thing called the PwnPad (pen-testing tablet with custom Backtrack-like OS) and they said:

Quote from: Wired Magazine
Some important hacking tools have already been ported to Android, but Pwnie Express says that they’ve added some new ones. Most importantly, this is the first time that they’ve been able to get popular wireless hacking tools like Aircrack-ng and Kismet to work on an Android device.

“Every pen tester we know has a phone and a tablet and a laptop, but none of them has been able to do pen-testing from the tablet,” says Dave Porcello, Pwnie Express’s CEO.

The trick here is that Android’s streamlined version of the Linux operating system does not support the kernel-level wireless features that these tools need to mess around with the data on wireless networks (something known as packet injection).

Pwnie Express solved the problem by getting a TP-Link wireless adapter to support packet injection on Android.

Now I know this doesn't have a direct mention of monitor mode and such, but I'm thinking maybe there is a relation between the two, because they both refer to the capabilities of the integrated wireless card.

Thank you I will look in to this. :)

edit: this wont help me at all, its not the OS that makes this work its the hardware, ther system they have requires an usb  wifi card, they also try to sell the whole tablet but i don't think there's anything special with there system that cant be fixed with backtrack or Ubuntu..

Yeah I meant more like maybe the reason why you can't switch to monitor mode is the same reason that made those dudes install an external antennae. I dunno about their system or w/e but it wasn't relevant to the point I was trying to make anyway.

It's too bad that it's not the same cause though. Soz man.

Write a custom kernal and driver to be flashed on your android device to support monitor mode of your device. A simple application wont be able to do it, backtrack installed or not. If there were drivers for the wifi card in the device that supports monitor mode, you would just need to enable it in the kernal.

I've seen and read that it is working, might have to fuck with it a bit to get it to work; I don't have a phone to support it. But screenshots have shown it working so it is possible.

I know phones are more prevalent, but if your going mobile why not use a BeagleBone Black or RasPi?  Both are cheap enough and can and will run circles around any phone you have in your pocket.

I found a S3 on my way home after a night out, figured id play with it abit, im already a fan of my Pi to the point of my first install (* after rooting obviously ;o *) was VNC so I could use the S3 as a monitor for the Pi I carry in my bag instead of the ugly 6" screen I was using before. Id actually just downloaded there apk file a minute ago but upon checking the notes its monitor mode only without injection capability :/ I was trying to have a option where I can "Always" have tools handy as sometimes I cant keep the Pi, powerpack and antenna around.

Like I said, it's possible. You will need a USB On-The-Go cable, an external wifi adapter that supports monitor/injection and then add the wireless drivers to your kernel. Then from there you could use an chrooted kali image to utilize the tools you need for wireless pentesting.
