Anonymous Torrenting
« on: March 15, 2013, 08:36:51 pm »
This is a really n00by question but Is there any ways to torrent anonymously? I've used PeerBlock but I heard that is not really effective. I've heard about BTorrent but that costs money.

Any idea what would happen if an average user is investigated and found to have (for example) a TB of illegal  download material in different parts of the world?

Investigated for what?

I was investigated for hacking a server, the police came and confiscated my HDD's(~2.5TB) and i had lots of warez in there. I didnt get anything for that.

Probably because whatever country you come from has lenient or virtually nonexistent warez/piracy laws.

Sadly, the only way to reliably torrent (anonymously) at high speeds is going to cost some $$. You could also use some sort of proxy chain or a tunnel, but that would straight up KILL your speed. Best bet is a seedbox if you really want to torrent serious amounts of data, and ofc, stick to private torrents. That'll help a lot ;)

Edit:
Wow, kinda late...sorry about that

By investigated you must mean that this user is a suspect and that the police has issued a warrant, entered the users appartment and taken the users computer?
So first you have to be  a suspect in a crime investigation. What happens next depends on what country you live in and the laws in said country.

I had been a victim of the "FBI Warning, you have 3 days to pay an X amount" scam recently. I did know it was a scam soon after, but for those few moments when the warning came up, my heart pounded to my throat.

After I hysterically powered off the computer and did research, I found out someone had sent that, and it wasn't an automated download. How can I prevent future such scams, or being a target to such threats?

If you surf the world wide web, you can't. Install Ghostery & AdBlock+ or similar plugins in your browser to limit some of the crap but at the end of the day, scams are part of the Internet, just as they are in the offline world. Learn to live with it.

You should consider investing in a VPN (Yes, paid) which is entirely for the use of Torrent downloads.

However, this doesn't limit you to just torrents, but they're are based on that purpose.
Peerblock is good, but if you do buy a VPN, research into stopping DNS leaks inside Windows.

DNS leaks + Torrent VPN = Useless.
I use GNU/Linux everyday so never get dns leaks.

Sure enough, you might think "Well torrents are free, if I buy a VPN then torrenting is no longer free"
I thought the same, but I'd rather have protection than a 'Go to jail card'

It's well worth it, considering you can get 3 months, easily for under 15$.

Free VPNs are useless also, they don't allow P2P or heavy traffic (which is completely understandable)

Two Paid Torrent VPNs I'm aware of currently:
www.torrentprivacy.com

www.strongvpn.com << More expensive that TorrentPrivacy but has multiple server locations and connections (PPTP, L2TP, SSTP)
