General discussion / Re: Any fellow skaters out there?
« on: September 08, 2014, 05:16:39 am »
From time to time.

Plan B board, Independent trucks, don't really care for the wheels or bearings.

Mostly flat ground now since I don't really skate anymore. Skated a little bit last week and my bag of tricks is pretty much limited to kickflip, heelflip, 360 flip and a couple easy tricks. Miss my good skating days.

This is my latest weekend project. It's a Ruby gem that lets you access some stats about your hardware. At the moment you can get the CPU temperature and fan speed. Only works on OS X. The source code is interesting if you wonder how to integrate C code in a Ruby gem.

Obviously you are not using the good version of Java. The error is pretty clear.

I've been here for over 6 years now and what I'm really happy to see now is how every board of the forum is at least a bit active. Back in 2007-2008 it was only about hacking and defacing websites for fun. Now there are good technical posts, the programming forums are active (which is really awesome to see) and people help each other to answer questions from anybody. While I don't really post anywhere I still lurk around and as a founding member of this forum I'm really happy to see where were at now.

The scene: http://www.p2presource.com/ftp/guidetoscene.html

Scene release rules: http://scenerules.irc.gs/

The 2nd link shows how scene releases should be labeled and encoded. When a group doesn't respect some rules their release will be nuked.

Hacking and Security / Re: Bypass torrent block of my university network?

I've been using https://www.feralhosting.com for the last month. The smallest plan is really good for the money. Uploaded over 4.5 TB this month for 18$. Their bandwidth meter isn't working.

Projects and Discussion / Re: What is YOUR favourite coding language?

I use Ruby for most of my projects that do not require native code.

Both are bad practice these days. If you're still handling SQL with PHP these days, your safest and most up-to-date bet is to use PDO.

Saying handling SQL in PHP is always bad isn't true. It all depends on your high-level architecture. If you have a multi-tier architecture and you have a layer that's hidden from the GUI (web page) and your business layer you can code your data access layer in any language you want and possibly on another server. Now if you choose to use PHP for that layer that's up to you. But you could also do it in Python, Ruby, etc. while everything else on your website is in PHP.

As I mentioned above in some countries and/or commercial thingy or whatever it is possible to order movies on-demand before they are out in DVD. Most of the early WEBRips that come out weeks before DVDs have korean subs. They mainly come from asian countries and english audio is added on top of the image.

Quick search on the Pirate Bay. All the "big" movies have WebRIPs.

There are a few options. Screeners are usually sent out for festival and events and sometime get leaked. These past months/year there has been a lot of WebRIP as well. Some countries, ISP or airlines sometime offer movies that in still in theater and unreleased in DVD on-demand. They are usually in high quality (at least 720p). There are some other rare cases like a few years ago when the pre-release of X-Men was leaked without half the effects yet in there.

Hardware / Re: Which laptop would you choose?
« on: December 08, 2013, 12:12:05 am »
Do you have a powerful desktop computer too? If so I'd go for something a bit cheaper but definitely with a SSD. The difference is mind-blowing if you get a good one.

I also don't see why you'd need more then 8gb of RAM in a laptop... not that it hurts.

Same reason you'd need more RAM on a desktop computer. I do everything on my laptop and honestly think it's far more convenient than a desktop computer. My development environment is always with me. Couldn't be happier with 15" screen, 256 SSD, i7 and 16 GB RAM all in my bag.

Recently I've been surprised with the prices on Amazon (.com). I'm getting new SSD and RAM this week and so far it seems they have the best prices by far even if I'm not from the US.
