How is Hotspotshield?
« on: September 16, 2012, 01:59:19 am »
How is Hotspotshield when it comes to not logging data/ its effectivity? Pros and cons? I have heard of this one but I heard free VPN's are a no-no. What do ya think?

Honestly, I dont understand why one would use these proxy/VPN services. That is, unless it is for privacy only, not for malicious use.

These kinds of services log, report and share information with anyone really. If you want a good proxy for malicious use, get a server and make a proxy yourself.

Free services are a no-no, again, if you are going to do malicious stuff. Otherwise, I guess it is just fine.

I have only used Hotspotshield a few times a very long time ago, its speed is like any free service (not awesome).

Just my two cents anyway.

This. Regardless if it's a free or commercial service they are still subject to local laws and if you honestly think that some random person is willing to risk prison time for you personally, you are mistaken. For on-line anonymity perhaps in places that don't like that sort of thing (or for whatever reason), use Tor.

Rooting/gaining access to a server is too wide of a topic to explain in a single post, there is an infinite ways of going about it. Additionally, setting up a proxy is no different from setting up any other program. Learn linux and learn to set up programs and configure them, then find a proxy system and set it up.

Of course you can use windows as well, but as almost 70% of all servers out there run linux and those who run windows are either forced to by contract or they just dont know better.

This might be interesting (windows proxy software): http://evilzone.org/anonymity/3proxy-all-sorts-of-proxy-servers-(http-https-ftp-socks45-msn-)/

I don't know anything about Linux actually. I figured Windows was the best?

If you ask me, Windows servers is the biggest piece of crap MS have created. But then again, what do I know.

I recommend having Linux on your computer and and using Xbox or PS3 for gaming :)

What makes Linux superior to Windows?

hundreds of little things, and some of the bigger ones off the top of my head:

- very few viruses and malware in relation to Windows.
- great memory management and fewer system crashes in relation to Windows. (I have a little linux server in my room that has been running for about 4 months without a restart or a crash)
- runs on much more different hardware then windows.
- It is free as in beer
- it is free (the code is opensource and you can take it and modify it)
- MUCH better community. Any answer is answered in a few mins.
- So many different flavours (distros) for everyone depending on their experience, requirements and intended use.
- It is VERY configurable. You can literally tweak every single option and setting. Windows is not nearly as configurable.
- You can choose between dozens of desktop environments / window managers. In windows you just have one option.
- LiveCD/USB : you can take the os with you anywhere.
- Multiple desktops.
- Quicker bug and security fixes.
- Has a lot more drivers included then windows. For example, when I installed win on my laptop, I had to manually find wifi, webcam and sound drivers, but with linux it worked out of the box.
- Software repos: this makes it very easy to download software while knowing that it has almost no chance of having malware.
- much more secure kernel.

I could go on, but I think I already made my point.
However, Windows does have it's uses so I am not saying it should not be used.
