: So, what do you do?
: lucid September 13, 2012, 04:08:49 AM
I wasn't sure if this should go in the random or general discussion so those with more authority feel free to move this. I was really just curious about what you guys do for a living.

I myself just got a job at a plastics factory. Not all of us can work cool networking or ISP jobs or something :( .

So, what do you guys do?

@polyphony, I got my first job when I was 16. Check restaurants for dishwashing jobs, if you get the right one it will be the most fun job you'll ever have. All depends on the staff your working with though :P

@chronicx, damn man. Wanna hook me up and customize my '93 civic? Its a 2 door coupe ;) but a students budget lol

@lucid, what do you do there?? It actually sounds kinda interesting depending on what your position is.

Hope you pick engine. but if you wanna continue this topic, get at me in a pm. Dont wanna jack a topic. But yeah, i'd like to work at a computer related job, but for the record, I am a true lover of my job. I look forward to going to work, thats something not alot of people can say, so whatever job you get make sure you love it.

Hi guys,

I am working as an network engineer for a production company. The company has round about 16 locations with nearly 5000 computer users. The location I am working at is on the way to become the centralized datacenter. For now we have 6 locations migrated and connected to our infrastructure. We plan to finish the migration of all locations in the next 3 years. :) So you can inagine we have a lot of work to do.

I make sites (freelancer), not that I like it, but it's something. I just sent my CV to an AV company to see what happens. With the money I'm saving I'm planning to have a company in security of some sort (not pentesting or similar, I like the cyberwar research & development trend!). I used to have a escorts website, but I sold it. I used to sell a software to win the lottery, like a "keygen", of course it didn't work (the software itself, the sellings kept me up during the entire year of 2009). In short, that's what I do, freelancing and entrepreneurship.

EDIT: I'm at the middle of my BSc.

Maybe right now; but nobody starts work at the top. You will get there soon, everyone has to put in their time. Just keep working at it.

I work currently as a Network Technician for a township in Southern Ontario. It's a good job, and my boss and I are great friends.

@polyphony - You can also get jobs at grocery stores. My parents pressured me to get a job over the summer when I was 16 and I ended up being a cashier for a while.

But now I work part time for a data center, and part time programming for one of my professors while I go to school.

I currently do video editing.
Nothing fancy, just boring wedding videos, celebrations and very small scale events.
Other guys film it, I edit it and turn raw footage into a dvd by cutting out all the boring bits, adding graphics (images, text, motion graphics, animations, effects), music etc.
I use Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, Encore and the rest of the master collection, along with some plugins from red giant.

This work can get monotonous and boring so quickly.
It pays the bills so gotta do it, but I am planing to start moving into computer related jobs in near future.

I have a small techblog which I just started, I got suspended by my webhost (I sp@m3d emails using my own hosting) silly me I know :).

BTW I live in the Philippines where technology is just starting to bloom. Hell, we can't even automate our voting system.

Since people are mentioning freelance gigs, I'll add to mine.

I build robotics and other side projects for people. Mostly mothers who want their kid to get an "A" on their science projects. They pay me to build something cool, and their kid wins the fair, well, I win the science fair but meh.

Also fixing computers for friends and family, getting them music and movies, quick programs to help on automating tasks, malware removal, PC maintenance/optimization, etc...

I don't always get money for it, but if I don't get paid with cash, I'll get weed out of it.

I know what he means! Where I am currently living, there are 3 related degrees. IT Engineering, Computer Science and Telecommunications Engineering, if you will. From what I have reference of, the IT Engineer is prepared to be a software developer, the Computer Scientist is prepared to do calculations with supercomputers, virtualization, and such, and the Telecommunications Engineers do work for phone and data carriers, ISPs, etc. Not going to disclose location, tho. But if he's in the same place I am, he for sure knows the semester is quite expensive, because it's one of the "Elite Four Universities" :-P

I think I take first place for the shittiest job here. According to the Jargon file I think, drudgery and boredom are evil.

That makes me Satan for working at this job. Fuck factory jobs. I literally perform the same motion countless times over the course of eight hours. It's the worst fucking thing I could think of doing. It's so mother fucking boring it makes me depressed the other 16 hours out of every day that I'm not working. I can't even try and distract myself with some in depth thought. It's so boring and repetitive that it numbs my brain. I just stare at what I'm doing with barely a thought in my head but "Jesus christ this fucking sucks I want to fucking kill myself." Then when I get home I'm too burnt out from doing the same exact thing over and over again all day that I can't get my brain to focus on anything worthwhile. I can't read or learn anything.

Ugh I fucking hate this. I know this sounds whiny but I have no motivation or interest in anything anymore. Humans aren't built to do jobs that fucking robots would be bored at. It's unhealthy and unnatural and fucking evil.

lucid, that is why we need to make sure that we invent and engineer high precision mobile robots that can reason out what humans are telling them to do, and do it for them in a quick and controllable manner. Once we have a few robots in every household, everything will change. The robot will do jobs for you. You will spend your days innovating, creating and exploring.

Cool. We don't have weapons. They tell us we dont need them because our job isn't to get involved. It is to observe and report. Still a pretty nice job though..  Better than minimum wage and plenty of down time to read a book or something.

The company I work for has 2 different guards, Unarmed and Armed, unarmed starts off at $11/hr and then armed starts off at $15/hr. It all depends on what you're guarding. Take for example armored trucks or banks. Even the local Applebees on weekends has hired my company for an armed guard. Its nice being able to carry a Glock .40 on my hip :D It's interesting to know that I'm not the only security guard on the forum!

I think this is a pretty cool topic but what I'm personally interested is not just what people are currently doing but what people WANT to do.  What're you aiming for?

Current job: Security Systems Engineer for a network security company
I code things like Detection Prevention Modules, packet loggers, network security scanners, traffic statistics generators, firewall automation drivers, dynamic host intrusion prevention systems, etc.

Previous job: Director of Security(hehe, DoS) & Level 3 Grid Engineer at a cloud hosting company
I designed security protocols, did audits, cleaned up after the messes of stupid people who thought 777 was good perms for their shared hosting server, created software & modules for use with the grid & cloud technologies we were using, etc.

Always: Technical Contractor & Independent Instructor
I do odd jobs for different people & their companies.  Typically things that they can't find someone else to do without spending a great deal of money or things that others have told them is 'impossible'(like building an OS for embedded equipment that you don't have access to in under 72 hours).  I also teach/tutor on various subjects including programming, system administration, security, etc.

Dream job: Teaching
I enjoy teaching a great deal and eventually hope to finish degrees necessary to teach software engineering at a college level.
: Re: So, what do you do?
: techb September 20, 2012, 10:36:59 PM
Dream job:
Electrical engineer. I would love to get into a prototyping position for embedded devices like cell phones, or even better, kid toys. I would also love to do career programming for a company, as in my actual job title of being a software engineer not just freelance stuff.

I wouldn't mind teaching robotics or coding. I've thought about approaching something like the boy scouts and see if they would let me teach the kids.

It can be a hard job, but I would love to get payed for doing pen testing. If not pen testing, then I would also like to work as a network/security admin at some rather sensitive company.

Awesome.

Even more awesome.

+1 For what equipment/architecture?

PC Engines WRAP.2C - x86, MMX-compatible AMD Geode(though, at the time, it was still National Semiconductor's processor).  The storage medium was a 64 MB CF card.  I was able to build the entire system to fit within 12 MBs so I created a filesystem image that was 'partitioned'(that was a bit of a PITA to do) 3 ways; 24 MBs for /, 32 MBs for /mnt(where backups were to be stored) and 8 MBs for SWAP.  The wireless card was an Atheros model that I can't recall, currently.  Figuring out how to set up the boot structure for equipment that I didn't have was probably the most troubling part.  It took me some time but I was still able to make delivery an hour early.

The purpose of the device was to make it cheap & easy to set up 'free' public wifi access for small businesses which would increase their sales and more or less advertise itself.  Any purchasing customer would receive a little code(usually found on a receipt) that could be used as a key to allow them access to the wifi for an appropriate period of time.  This was one of the original reasons for quickly writing ncrypt (http://xires.feedthetrolls.net/code/hilite.php?src=ncrypt.c).  A default firewall rule on the device prevented people from connecting to outside sources.  When a valid code was submitted on a captcha that ran on the device's internal webserver, the form-handling CGI(coded in C) would trigger another process to add the user's connection to the firewall ahead of the default rule.  This effectively let them skip the default deny rule and therefore access the Internet.  When the timer triggered, the rule would 'expire' and be removed from the firewall.  The timer was set depending on the code that was entered.  This way the place of business could specify that, say, an hour could be provided for someone who just bought a coffee and 4 hours for someone who purchased dinner.  The dollar amount was used as a seed and a timestamp(at millisecond resolution) would be used as the key.  The resulting hash(no, it wasn't a common one like MD5 or SHA1) could be checked against a generated table to determine how much time the customer had just purchased.

I did, eventually, receive a device of my own for further development & testing.  It now sits in a dremeled used Super SNES game box.  It's pretty hacktastic.
: Re: So, what do you do?
: fable September 21, 2012, 01:44:43 PM
To be honest, I am probably the least goal oriented person I know. But if someone told me to pick what I wanted to do for the rest of my life right at this very moment, I'd say being a security guard for sure. Although, being armed would be better. lol.

The company I work for has 2 different guards, Unarmed and Armed, unarmed starts off at $11/hr and then armed starts off at $15/hr.

What company do you work for and where? $15 an hour sounds terrific! heck even the $11 is better than my $9 an hour.

And techb, loving that new avatar.
